If artistic and lush wedding flowers are the things your wedding dreams are made of, than Floral Designs by Justine is the wedding florist in CT you are looking for!
Justine always knew she wanted to be a floral designer since she was in high school, and opened her business Floral Designs by Justine during her senior year at UConn in 2014. Now, six years later, she's heading into her seventh wedding season and also teaches floral design as an adjunct professor at UConn.
Justine runs her business from the detached finished garage of her parents' farmette property, where she also grows a lot of her own flowers. During the summer she has a flower cart where passersby can stop and pick up a bouquet of her locally-grown blooms to bring back to their home and now that she's had the cart for a few years she has regular customers of the cart.
From this space her business focuses creating the floral designs for mainly weddings and large events, though she does have a few regular inn and restaurant clients who she does weekly arrangements for.
Justine tries to be as eco-friendly in her business as possible, recycling all the plastic that flowers come shipped in, saving and reusing all the rubber bands, limiting the amount of floral foam that she uses and buying from local growers as much as possible.
All of her designs are collaborations with her clients. She creates what's called a 'floral recipe' specific to each client based on the colors they've chosen, their floral likes and dislikes and what will make a well designed arrangement. "I love foliage and asymmetry," she says. She also has what she calls the "white t-shirt" analogy to explain why she'll add what seems like plain flowers and foliage to a floral recipe:
You buy a white t-shirt and put it on and that's all it is - a plain white t-shirt. But then you pair it with some cute jeans, a fun necklace, maybe a jacket, and you fix your hair nice and suddenly that plain white t-shirt is ready for a night of partying. Just like all those parts of the outfit might be plain on their own, you bring them together and they make a complete look.
I asked her what advice she had for people looking for a florist. "Don't shop just by budget. Every florist will have something different that they provide in their quotes, it's apples and oranges. So choose the person you connect with the best because they'll create what you truly want for your wedding." She also says once you've booked your florist, you should feel confident in trusting their creativity to create the floral recipe and design something amazing for you.
Couples can expect to spend a minimum of $3000 for full wedding service for Justine's fantastic work, which can include all bouquets, centerpieces, boutonnieres and a few floral extras. Justine services the entire state of Connecticut and the surrounding states and is currently booking into 2021. If you think Justine might be the florist for you (spoiler alert: she totally is!), you should reach out to her on her website here before her 2021 calendar is fully booked!
